Boys tennis players hit the courts | Tennis

It’s time for boys tennis season to get underway. With fall sports kicking off, the Discoverers started practice on Monday.

Columbus High School in combination with Scotus Central Catholic High School is the only boys high school tennis team in the area.

Columbus starts out their season on Aug 23 in a dual against Grand Island which will take place on the road.

Discoverer fans will get to see their team play at home for the first time on Sep 1 at Pawnee Park in the Columbus Invitational.

Hastings, Holdrege, Lexington, Lincoln Northeast and Norfolk will be the other teams competing in the Columbus Invitational.

The Columbus Invitational is one of the key tournaments according to head coach Scott Bethune. The other key tournament Bethune identified was the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference tournament, which takes place on Sep 29 at North Platte High School.

Due to only 54 schools in the state of Nebraska sponsoring boy’s tennis, Columbus competes in Class A along with 26 other schools.

In last year’s state tournament Lincoln Southwest dominated the competition as they finished with 60 points, followed by Creighton Preparatory School, with 37.5 points.

Last year the Discoverers went 0-6 in duals, but as a team finished 20th at state.

See more about all area teams in our fall sports preview, Aug. 23.
